Approximately one and half hours drive from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, lies the beach side town Port Dickson. Famous for it’s serene beaches, Port Dickson has grown and developed into a major local tourist destination favored by many, especially during the weekends and festive breaks.
To cater for the increasing demand for holiday accommodation, hotels, big and small have sprouted up along the coastline. In recent years, budget hotels have also made their presence felt. These budget hotels are prefect for one night stay over due to their cheap prices.
Though there have been many complains about the cleanliness of Port Dickson’s beaches, it remains as one of the favorite spots for one day travellers from the city. The state of the beaches are not as bad as it has been sometimes painted by the media. Long white beaches are still in abundance for those who know where to find them.
The fact that Port Dickson beaches remains welcoming is due to the fact that the sea is not as rough as those found at the East Coast. This is because the sea in Port Dickson is actually the Straits Of Malacca, separating Malaysia and Indonesia. Thus the condition of the sea here seldom experience any “roughness”. The only time you can see 3 or 4 feet waves is during the monsoon months which falls around September every year. Other than that, the sea is calm all year round.
With the abundance of tourist visiting Port Dickson weekly, hotels compete healthily among themselves, each offering incentives and attractive packages of their own. All this augurs well for the tourists.
Port Dickson town itself has not changed much over the last 30 years. High rise office buildings and malls are prohibited in the town center to keep it’s image as a tourist center and not another metropolis concrete jungle. The tallest shops are 5 storeys and below. An exception you see is the District Police Headquarters, which rises above 10 storeys, but that is the only tall building you will see in Port Dickson town.
Port Dickson town is quiet after 10 pm. There is no night spots and all the night activities are concentrated at the Hotel lobbies and discos. Due to this, the town remains very peaceful and local residents likes it that way. If you have a day off, take a leisurely drive to Port Dickson and check the beaches and hotels around town.
